Ziel ist es, zu Schlussfolgerungen zu gelangen, die auch dem Geschichtslehrer im schulischen Alltag helfen und dabei auf wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen und Theorien aufbauen.
Die Motivation und ihre unterschiedlichen Faktoren für den Unterricht werden als erstes betrachtet sowie einige Modelle und Theorien vorgestellt. Die Erkenntnisse aus der Motivationsforschung werden dann auf die Geschichtsdidaktik übertragen. Vor allem das umfassende Werk von Mietzel (2007), die Forschungen von Heckhausen (1974; 2010) und die Studien zum „Flow-Erleben“ von Csikszentmihalyi (2005) werden hierzu herangezogen.

Außerdem soll der Vermutung nachgegangen werden, dass die Motivation des Lehrers in Zusammenhang mit der Motivation der Schüler steht. Die Thematik unterschiedlicher Altersbedingungen wird ebenfalls in diesem Kapitel aufgegriffen.
Die auf diese Weise herausgearbeiteten Ergebnisse werden schließlich noch einmal zusammengefasst und gemeinsam mit der Arbeit kritisch reflektiert.
