Der Schwerpunkt soll dabei auf der Betrachtung des Einstiegs liegen.
Diese Arbeit geht nicht von idealtypischen Klassen mit immer fleißigen Schülern aus, sondern versucht realistische und sogar adverse Beispiele zu erdenken, um die hier betrachteten Theorien und Ratschläge zu bewerten. Ziel ist es, zu Schlussfolgerungen zu gelangen, die auch dem Geschichtslehrer im schulischen Alltag helfen und dabei auf wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen und Theorien aufbauen.
Die Motivation und ihre unterschiedlichen Faktoren für den Unterricht werden als erstes betrachtet sowie einige Modelle und Theorien vorgestellt. Die Erkenntnisse aus der Motivationsforschung werden dann auf die Geschichtsdidaktik übertragen. Vor allem das umfassende Werk von Mietzel (2007), die Forschungen von Heckhausen (1974; 2010) und die Studien zum „Flow-Erleben“ von Csikszentmihalyi (2005) werden hierzu herangezogen.
Das darauffolgende Kapitel beschäftigt sich näher mit den Einstiegen. Das einschlägige Werk von Schneider (2001) nimmt dabei einen zentralen Platz bei der Bearbeitung ein.
Der anschließende Hauptteil der Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Möglichkeiten, Motivation im Unterricht zu erzeugen oder zu steigern und die Voraussetzungen dafür zu schaffen. In diesem Zusammenhang finden die Theorien zur intrinsischen und extrinsischen Motivation, die Bedürfnistheorie nach Maslow und vor allem die Aktivationstheorie ihren Platz. Außerdem soll der Vermutung nachgegangen werden, dass die Motivation des Lehrers in Zusammenhang mit der Motivation der Schüler steht. Die Thematik unterschiedlicher Altersbedingungen wird ebenfalls in diesem Kapitel aufgegriffen.
Die auf diese Weise herausgearbeiteten Ergebnisse werden schließlich noch einmal zusammengefasst und gemeinsam mit der Arbeit kritisch reflektiert.
