Im Laufe der Menschheitsgeschichte haben immer wieder unterschiedliche Formen und Ausprägungen der Sklaverei sowie des Handels mit Menschen bestanden. Dementsprechend wurde von Menschenrechtsaktivisten, Hilfsgruppen, Staaten, und von Seiten der internationalen Gemeinschaft auf unterschiedliche Arten immer wieder versucht, die Sklaverei und den Menschenhandel zu unterbinden. Bis heute ist dies nicht gelungen.
„Slavery exists on each continent of the realm and impacts so much countries.“ Während die overseas Labour association (ILO) von 12,3 Millionen versklavten Menschen weltweit ausgeht, schätzt der Menschenrechtsaktivist Kevin Bales, dass 27 Millionen Menschen in der Sklaverei leben. Die höchsten Schätzungen belaufen sich sogar auf bis zu 2 hundred Millionen Sklaven weltweit. Allen Schätzungen gemeinsam ist aber, dass die heutige Sklaverei Dimensionen angenommen hat, die das Ausmaß der Sklaverei zur Zeit des transatlantischen Sklavenhandels um ein Vielfaches überschreitet.
Ziel dieses Lehrforschungsprojektes ist es, das Ausmaß und die Formen der heutigen Sklaverei sowie des heutigen Menschenhandels zu erfassen, geschichtliche Hintergründe darzustellen, Ursachen aufzuzeigen und die Hauptbetroffenen zu nennen. Darüber hinaus werden direkte und indirekte Folgen der Sklaverei und des Menschenhandels aufgeführt sowie gesetzliche Grundlagen beschrieben. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit befasst sich schließlich mit der häufigsten shape des Menschenhandels, dem Menschenhandel zum Zweck der sexuellen Ausbeutung von Frauen und Mädchen. Hierbei wird zunächst ein unmittelbarer Bezug zu Europa und Deutschland hergestellt, es werden Mechanismen erläutert, die den Handel mit Menschen fördern und ermittelte Opfer sowie Täter beschrieben. Letztlich werden Forderungen zur Bekämpfung des Menschenhandels und der Sklaverei sowie zu einem verbesserten Umgang mit den Opfern genannt. Hierzu wurde auf zahlreiche Publikationen von namhaften Zeitungen und Zeitschriften zurückgegriffen, zahlreiche Berichte und Veröffentlichungen unterschiedlichster Regierungs- und Nichtregierungsorganisationen untersucht, sowie bereits vorhandene Forschungsarbeiten eingesehen.
